Summary Curriculum Vitae

  • I have been a fully accredited Emergency Department Consultant since 1988 and am currently Consultant in the Emergency Department at Hereford County Hospital. I was full time Senior Consultant at Gloucester Royal ED for 30 years.

  • I was a Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Accident & Emergency in 1995 and a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Glasgow and Edinburgh since 1982.

  • I have been a Royal College of Emergency Medicine Examiner since 2005 [FRCEM].

  • Medico-legal work has been a major interest over the last 35 years, attending Bond Solon training seminars on Woolf reports, giving expert evidence in court and report preparation in general.

  • I am registered with the UK Expert Witnesses and APIL.

  • I was updated and accredited in Bond Solon Medico-legal Reporting parts 1 and 2 in 2013 and registered and accredited with Medco as of March 2015. I completed further annual Bond Solon accreditation updates in 2019.

  • My medico-legal work has involved the preparation of approximately 500-700 reports a year, joint statements with colleagues, pre-trial negotiations and giving expert witness evidence in Coroners Inquests, the Crown Court, the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

  • I am increasingly instructed on Emergency Department breach of duty and quality of care in medical negligence enquiries. I am an Emergency Department Expert advisor to the Welsh Health Board.

  • I was trained in General Surgery and Orthopaedics in Glasgow and in A&E on the Bristol Senior Registrar rotation.  During the latter I undertook training attachments in Neurosurgery, Plastics and Burns at Frenchay Hospital, Paediatrics at the Bristol Children’s Hospital and further Orthopaedic training in Taunton and Bristol.

  • My work at Hereford County includes interests in major trauma, head and neck injuries, resuscitation, burns, sports and soft tissue injury.

  • I am trained in Stroke Thrombolysis.

  • I was Lead Consultant in the Trust for complaints for 10 years.

  • I have published widely on trauma, fractures and emergency medicine, and was a referee for papers for the Journal of A&E Medicine.

  • I was the sole author of a review chapter on ‘Neck Injuries’ in a CD-ROM for personal injury lawyers, principally entitled ‘Medico-Legal Solutions – Personal Injury and Criminal Trauma’ [Medico-legal Publications].

  • I collaborated with Prof. Matthew Cooke in the national 'MINT' trial of Physiotherapy vs. standard treatment in Neck Injuries with over 600 patients recruited locally in 2007 [see references for publication in Lancet].

  • My Department sees an average of 40 new patients a month with neck injuries sustained in road traffic collisions.
